Taking your website online- Webhosting

July 1, 2013

For web developers and business owners, their website is like their gem. They cut it, polish it, put it on the display case- all in the hope that one day it will fetch them a grand price. But after you have spent a considerable time designing your website, you have fit in all the tools and widgets and applied the theme; you have to prepare it for the most important thing- surfers!

In order to be accessible from the World Wide Web, the website must be ON the World Wide Web. You need a gateway into the network connecting almost every computer (read, customer) in the world. For your website to ‘exist’ on the internet, it has to be ‘hosted’ on a server that has that ticket, and is the gateway. The action of your site hosted on a server where it can be accessed from the World Wide Web, is known as ‘webhosting’. The said server will act as your ‘base’, wherein your web page can safely stay here, while conversing with the world. These servers charge a fee for the ‘accommodation’. It is understandable that different customers will have different budgets. So most web-hosting services have ‘packages’. They offer different levels of functionality and manoeuvrability, based on how much you can spend. This allowance of web ability is known as web-space. You will be charged according to how ‘heavy’ your webpage is- whether you have an internal search engine, or a company e mail service.

‘Domain name’ is that little two or three letter postfix at the end of your web page’s name. These codes are national, and vary for every country. You can mostly host a website in a country of your choice- your reasons could be economic as well as legal. For example, websites hosted on a server in the Nederlands will have .nl, or those on the former servers Soviet Russia (yeah, still operating somewhere- and a favourite haunt of the not-so-trustworthy surfers), ‘.su’

In order to get the best deal, look up a list of web hosts; compare prices, promotional offers, and reliability. Watch over your domain- because as exemplified in the beginning of this article, if the website was your blog, would you hand it over to just anybody to sell??
